I have installed Windows Multipoint 2012 on an old Dell PowerEdge 840 server we had kicking around just to run some tests (it will never go into production). This has an ATI ES1000 onboard graphics chip (fairly basic chip). However Windows 2012 (which MWP is based on) installs the default Windows basic graphics adapter driver (WDM). I had a problem with the display driver on Windows Server 2008 R2, so this modified driver was born. But I didn't know before that it won't work on Win2012. So sorry for that, this topic states 2012 in its title, but the solution is for pre 2012 only.

DESCRIPTION

An HP ProLiant server configured with an on-board ATI ES1000 Video Controller and running Microsoft Windows Server 2012 may be unable to display in '16 bit color: maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200' or '32 bit color: maximum resolution of 1280 x 1024.'

The ATI ES1000 video controller is only supported by the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter driver in Windows Server 2012.

On an HP ProLiant server configured with an on-board ATI ES1000 Video Controller , when clicking Advanced Settings under Control PanelAppearanceDisplayScreen ResolutionAdvanced Settings, the 'Adapter' tab displays the Adapter Type as Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. The Maximum Resolution for the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is 1024 x 768.

HP has no plans for ATI ES1000 video driver support for Windows Server 2012.

If a server does not have a Windows Display Driver Model-compliant graphics driver, Windows Server 2012 uses Microsoft Basic Display Adapter as the default adapter.
